Masjid e Nabawi is one of the largest Mosques in the world. It was originally built by the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) himself. It is the second mosque built in Islamic history. It is the second sacred place in Islam after Masjid ul Haram Makah.
Origin of Masjid e Nabawi
Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to Madina in 622 C.E. It was a great reception by the inhabitants of Madina. Everyone wished that Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) would stay at their home. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) answered politely that “This camel Qaswa is commanded by Allah, where ever it stops, that will be my home. The camel stopped at a place owned by two orphan brothers Sahl and Suhail. The land had some resting spot for cattle, some place was used for drying dates and other end was used as burial ground. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) alighted and said, “This is the home”. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) refused to take the land as gift and purchased it.
Construction of Masjid e Nabawi
After purchasing the land the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) cleared the land by cutting trees and digging up the graves. Then he gave instructions to his followers to construct Masjid on the acquired land. The construction of the Mosque started immediately. The building was, made with bricks of stones and clay. The roof was made with palm branches and trunks were used as pillars. Small stones were used to make floor and prevent it from mud and dust. It measured around 100ft x 116.9ft. The height was 11.8 ft. At the back of the Mosque a shaded area named as Suffah was built for poor companions to spend their night. Two huts were built for the wives of Holy Prophet Hazrat Aisha and Hazrat Sauda (May Allah be pleased with them). The construction of the Mosque completed in seven months. The Mosque served as a religious school, community centre, court and lock up for prisoners. In 624 C.E when the Qibla was changed the Mosque was re orientated to the south.
Expansion of Masjid e Nabawi
Masjid e Nabawi was re built in the life of holy prophet (peace be upon him). After seven years at the time of Fatah Khyber when large number of Muslims visited to worship the capacity for their accommodation was lacking. Hazrat Usman (may Allah be pleased with him) paid for the land for extension that made the land 50 x 50 meters and height was extended to 3.5 meters.
Masjid e Nabawi in the light of Hadith
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: “Whoever performs forty Salah in my Masjid, not missing one Salah in the Masjid, for him is granted exemption from the fire of Hell, and exemption from punishment and he shall remain free of hypocrisy.” [Ahmad]
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) said: “One Salah offered in my Masjid is superior to one thousand Salahs offered in other Masjid except Masjid al-Haram (Makkah al-Mukarramah).” [Bukhari]

The religion of peace Islam is an absolute code of life which devises guiding principle for its Believers in every walk of life. ALLAH Almighty sent His Last divine Book, the Holy Quran on His Final Messenger, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) that contains important useful instructions for Muslims. It clearly informs about forbid-dance of sins and wrongdoings and like the periods and nations before them so that they can be successful in this world and hereafter.
Every person has the aware to differentiate between wrong and right, which calls for taking even a slight transgression as a huge means of destruction. A person should not belittle its small proportion of sins as they finally mount up to become eventual disappointment just like drops of water eventually form an ocean. The act of not focusing or weighing minor wrongdoings in significance leads to making habit of involving or committing them in daily life which is the reason of being unsuccessful in front of the ALLAH Almighty.
Verse 24:15 of Holy Quran
“When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.”
This above mentioned Quranic verse magnifies the degree of importance of small things that we do not usually care about doing. The ALLAH Almighty informs about the slight sins that are committed by humans one way or the other and that they do have a few serious repercussions.
A real disciple of the Religion of Peace Islam knows the quantity of harm a single action of crime does to it. A staunch believer of Islamic teachings takes each and every sin as a black spot on his or her heart which adds up to blackening of the whole heart eventually. It shows that a real believer has the clear realization about detrimental effects of even committing a slight action or thought of evil. On the other hands, an evil person keeps on enjoying the actions of wickedness and its heart is unconscious of its rightful responsibilities.
The Sacred Book Holy Quran of ALLAH Almighty sent down His Final and Last Book, in order to provide His servants true purpose and meaning of life. It clearly informs its readers about the rewards for noble and good deeds done and also the punishments in disobeying the commands of ALLAH Almighty.
Verse 15:50 of Holy Quran
And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
Thus, by reciting the Holy Quran, a person would come to know about serious results and punishment of one’s sins done in this life. Majority of us do not give much attention to our small deeds that also involve some minor sins. The need of the hour is to understand and realize that a person has to ask the Most Merciful, ALLAH Almighty for Mercy for all wrong and evil actions that are committed either voluntary or involuntary.

Observe, how reliant upon and submissive to ALLAH Almighty Prophet Ibraheem (AS) was. Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) had left His 2 dear ones, Bibi Hajra and Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) in a barren area in city Makkah. Makkah at the time was completely isolated with not any evident buildings or people living there as there was no water for survival. There, Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) left them. Following the order of ALLAH Almighty, Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) left.
Verse 37 of Surah Ibraheem;
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.
Bibi Hajra, the mother of Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) settled with Her son where Hazart Ibraheem (AS) left them. She drank from the water that, Hazrat Ibraheem (AS) had left for them. This water ultimately ran out as the water container dried up. As a result, Bibi Hajra became thirsty, and so did Her son who started crying and became unsettled because of his extreme thirst.
Bibi Hajra didn’t like to see Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) in that state and She set forth looking for water. Safa being the mountain closest to Her, She climbed it and looked down at the valley to see that if she could find some water or anyone to assist Her. She found no one there and so She descended from the Hill until She reached the valley. Then She climbed to Hill of Marwa in keeping Her search for water but to no avail.
She went back to Safa then back again to Marwah for many times. Then after she prayed a lot, there was Angel Hazrat Jibraeel (AS), who hit the ground with his wing until pure and fresh water emerged. That became well-known as Zamzam water. The mother of Hazrat Ismaeel (AS) gathered the water with her hands and collected it while it was springing out. Bibi Hajra thanked ALLAH Almighty, the One who endows countless bounties upon His slaves.
During Hajj and Umrah, pilgrims are recommended to drink water of Zamzam to their fill to quench their thirst. They also maintain the tradition of bringing it back for their family and friends.
Verse 2:158 of Holy Quran;
Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of ALLAH. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, ALLAH is appreciative and Knowing.
O ALLAH Almighty, we ask you to grant us Hajj and Umrah and the visit of the Prophet Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabwi) and Holy Kaaba. Ameen.
